Asthma Certificate
Is a six month distance learning course which is available to doctors, nurses and all health care workers who wish to gain a deeper insight into the management of asthma.
The SA Diploma in Asthma Care was started in March 2002 and modified by Prof Gillian Ainslie from the internationally renowned National Respiratory Training Centre course from the U.K. The text is updated annually to include new developments in asthma care. The course co-ordinator, Ms Bev Moore was appointed in February 2005. She has a National Diploma in Clinical Technology and has worked in paediatric lung function laboratories and respiratory and allergy / asthma clinics. She is a diplomate (with honours) from the first South African course.
The course comprises 6 months of distance learning with a mid-course revision session at the end of the first 3 months and a final revision day and examinations at the end of the 6 months.
Successful candidates receive a diploma and an "asthma educator" badge. Candidates include professional nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, medical technologists and doctors from the Public and Private Health sectors and from SA’s neighbouring states. The course has been accredited to UCT since its inception and CPD points are awarded to the categories of successful students who require these i.e. doctors, pharmacists, physiotherapists and medical technologists.
